SOUTH CAROLINA

Pam Culbert - I am Pam Culbert, Bitten in Wilson, NC, where I saw the tick although I didn't realize it was a tick and I had the bull's-eye rash. Moved to SC shortly after and no one would treat me even though I had seen the tick and rash. Finally, three years later, after reading much about Lyme and my symptoms getting worse, my family physician started treating me with a trial of doxycyclene after giving him lots of info on Lyme. Within four days I felt better than I had in three years. After three additional months on Doxy he referred me to Dr. J. We have discovered that our entire family of four has Lyme and all are being treated by Dr. J.

K. Liporace - I always looked forward to yearly camping with my dad. It was our bonding ritual. We would endure rain, burnt food, and enjoy plenty of hiking and sight seeing. I wouldn't trade the memories of waking up in a torrential down pour that encroached into our tent and caused my air mattress to float one evening for anything. What we didn't know was that our healthy, innocent recreation came with a serious price tag on the camping trip when I was 14. When I came home within a month it seemed that my hands became very stiff and couldn't limber up. From there fatigue set in. When I was young, I could sleep it off, but it would come unpredictably and abruptly as if a switch was being turned off inside my body. Somehow, I just assumed that this happened to everyone, so I accommodated it. The next thing to go was my jaw. At age 15 I was diagnosed with TMJD which I still have and also have had ringing in my ears since then as well that won't go away. At age 18 I was diagnosed with having a heart murmur. Well heart conditions run on both sides of my family, so I pushed it aside thinking, no big deal. At the same time and continuing to this day, I lose hair every August and experience a rash on my upper back that goes up the back of my neck to my forehead. I had difficulty with math during school; it didn't seem to stick (much to my dad's dismay since he has his PhD. in math). I have had two periods a month for 12 years and a host of ovarian cysts. I developed knee problems which ended up with surgery. During college, while studying with neck dorsiflexed, I developed barfing migraines, until I learned to study leaning back, with my head straight and my book up. At that time I also developed chronic constipation and sleep problems that have never gone away. When I got married, a month after, my husband and I were visiting his family and I was bitten again. Both times I did not have an EM rash and did not recall seeing a tick, which can be the size of the period at the end of this sentence.

In the interest of making the stories palatable for everyone, please spell-check your submissions, and substitute a word like "antibiotic(s)" or abx for drug names. This site is foremost about telling the story of our disease and problems with diagnosis, treatment, etc. Please refrain from listing every drug and/or dosage you have been on. We have all been through a unique experience and that is the focus of this page. Thanks for your understanding and cooperation.
